ANTHONY MEE
Tenor

Anthony Mee was born in Lancashire and began his musical studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
 
In recent seasons, Anthony has become well known for his portrayal of Bardolfo, having sung the role in major European houses such as Deutsche Staatsoper, Berlin conducted by Claudio Abbado, Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich conducted by Zubin Mehta, Salzburg Easter Festival conducted by Claudio Abbado, Salzburg Summer Festival conducted by Lorin Maazel and Ferrara Musica, Italy. He recently recorded the role for Deutsche Grammophon with Bryn Terfel in the title role.
 
Other roles include Basilio LE NOZZE DI FIGARO and Nick LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST for De Vlaamse Opera, Lippo Fiorentino STREET SCENE for Lyric Opera, Chicago, Goro MADAME BUTTERFLY for the Nationale Reisopera, Netherlands, Gaudenzio and Durand in Leoncavallo’s LA BOHEME at Theater an der Wien, Squeak BILLY BUDD for Teatro Carlo Felice, Genoa and also for  Bayerische Staatsoper and Basilio LE NOZZE DI FIGARO in Vienna.
 
His operatic roles for the major British Opera companies include the title role of Verdi’s ERNANI, Beppe and Canio I PAGLIACCI, Pong and Calaf TURANDOT, Italian Tenor DER ROSENKAVALIER, Gustavus UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, Panait in Martinu’s A GREEK PASSION and Dr Caius for Welsh National Opera, Gabriele Adorno SIMON BOCCANEGRA, Cavaradossi TOSCA, Beppe I PAGLIACCI, Nadir THE PEARL FISHERS, Lippo Fiorentino STREET SCENE, Alfred DIE FLEDERMAUS, Dancing Master ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, Pong and Calaf TURANDOT, Macduff and Malcolm MACBETH, Gaston LA TRAVIATA, Bardolfo FALSTAFF and Remendado CARMEN, Guillot de Morfontaine MANON for English National Opera, Arturo I PURITANI, King Ouf in Chabrier’s L’ETOILE for Opera North, Lippo Fiorentino STREET SCENE, Trabucco LA FORZA DEL DESTINO, Dr Caius FALSTAFF for Scottish Opera and Osaka in Mascagni’s IRIS for Opera Holland Park.
 
Anthony has appeared at all the major concert halls in Britain performing Verdi’s GIOVANNA D’ARCO at the Royal Festival Hall, Boito’s MEPHISTOPHELES, Verdi’s AROLDO and Puccini’s MANON LESCAUT at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Pong in a concert performance of TURANDOT with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Centre, London, Bardolpho in a semi staged concert performance of Verdi’s FALSTAFF at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester along with numerous Opera Galas at the Royal Albert Hall, Barbican and Royal Festival Hall, London and many open-air concerts throughout the United Kingdom.
 
He has performed many Oratorio pieces including Verdi REQUIEM, Puccini MESSA DI GLORIA, Berlioz TE DEUM and GRANDE MESSE DES MORT, Rossini STABAT MATER, THE DREAM OF GERONTIUS and many more.
 
Recordings include Operatic Highlights for Tosca Records, STREET SCENE for Decca conducted by John Mauceri and FALSTAFF for Deutsche Grammophon, conducted by Claudio Abbado. Anthony also sang the role of the Duke in Verdi’s RIGOLETTO for the Animated Opera series televised by the BBC.
