SYLVIA CLARKEMezzo-Soprano
Sylvia Clarke initially studied at the Conservatorium of Music Opera School, Sydney and was a member of the Sydney Operetta Touring Theatre Company before joining Opera Australia - she was also resident mezzo with the West Australian Opera Company. Sylvia Clarke now resides in the UK.
Operatic repertoire includes title role CARMEN, Ulrica UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, Amneris AIDA, Mistress Quickly FALSTAFF, Suzuki MADAMA BUTTERFLY, La Principessa SUOR ANGELICA, Auntie PETER GRIMES, Mother THE CONSUL, Marcellina LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Orlofsky DIE FLEDERMAUS, Hata THE BARTERED BRIDE and Third Lady DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE. Gilbert & Sullivan repertoire includes the contralto roles in THE MIKADO, YEOMEN OF THE GUARD, IOLANTHE, PATIENCE, THE GONDOLIERS, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, HMS PINAFORE and THE SORCERER.
A regular performer on the concert platform her vast repertoire includes Verdi REQUIEM, Elgar MUSIC MAKERS and DREAM OF GERONTIUS, Dvorak STABAT MATER, Stravinsky LES NOCES, Prokofiev ALEXANDER NEVSKY, Rossini PETITE MESSE SOLENNELLE, Handel MESSIAH, JUDAS MACCABEUS, Pergolesi STABAT MATER, Bach B MINOR MASS, Britten SPRING SYMPHONY and CANTATA ACADEMICA, Mozart REQUIEM, VESPERAE SOLENNES DE CONFESSORE and Vivaldi GLORIA. In recital she has performed SEA PICTURES, DAS LIED VON DER ERDE, RÜCKERT LIEDER, Brahms ALTO RHAPSODY and FOUR SERIOUS SONGS and the WESENDONCK LIEDER. Sylvia sings regularly at the Grim's Dyke (the home of W.S.Gilbert).
Engagements in 2012 include IOLANTHE for Carl Rosa at the Chichester Festival Theatre, THE GRAND DUKE for the Finborough Theatre and THE MIKADO and HMS PINAFORE for the International G&S Festival, Buxton.
