Phillip Joll was born in Wales and studied at the RNCM and the London National Opera Studio.
Phillip Joll has sung at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Opera North, Scottish Opera, Longborough Opera and Opera Holland Park and abroad at the New York Met, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, Arizona, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paolo, Opera Bastille Paris, Bordeaux, Dresden, Stuttgart, Cologne, Frankfurt, Munich, Karlsruhe, Dortmund, Brussels, Amsterdam, Reisopera Enschede, de Vlaamse Opera, Turin, Palermo, Bologna, Barcelona and in Korea and Bangkok.
He has a large repertoire including Wotan/Wanderer, Amfortas, Kurwenal, title role DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER, Donner, Barak, Johanaan, Orest, title role WOZZECK in both Berg and Gurlitt’s version, Pizarro and Kaspar DER FREISCHÜTZ. His Italian roles include Amonasro, Simon Boccanegra, Macbeth, Francesco I DUE FOSCARI, Falstaff, Anckarström, Rigoletto, Scarpia, Alfio CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA, Tonio I PAGLIACCI, Jack Rance LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST, Sharpless, Michele IL TABARRO in addition to Balstrode PETER GRIMES, King Fisher A MIDSUMMER MARRIAGE, Nick Shadow THE RAKE’S PROGRESS, Creon OEDIPUS REX, Priest Grigoris THE GREEK PASSION and Thoas IPHIGENIE EN TAURIDE.
Philip Joll has also appeared with leading orchestras throughout the world in a repertoire including the Verdi REQUIEM, Beethoven’s Choral Symphony, Mahler No. 8 and the Vaughan Williams SEA SYMPHONY, and has broadcast frequently on radio and television. On disc he has sung in the complete recordings of TRISTAN UND ISOLDE, PARSIFAL, THE GREEK PASSION and CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA.
Performances in 2013 include Wanderer SIEGRIED for Longborough Festival Opera, Alfred Doolittle MY FAIR LADY for Le Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris and a concert for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
